The Bull & Bear offers the opportunity to engage, inspire, and impact the McGill community.  Students from all fields are welcome to contribute to McGill’s only student-run news magazine.

Training and Staff Development

Joining The Bull & Bear staff launches you into a dynamic learning environment. Training is offered in writing, design, photography, videography, and media editing. In addition to training from your own section, you are welcome to attend training sessions with any team to broaden your skill sets and explore your interests.

The Social Media Team makes sure all the behind-the-scenes work done at The Bull & Bear makes it to the spotlight. We’re looking for dedicated, committed and experienced individuals. Love spending endless hours scrolling through your Facebook feed, tweeting at your favourite celebrity, or Instagramming your chai latte? Obsessed with digital trends and innovations? Why not apply? We could be the perfect fit.

Who We Look For

In our Social Media team, we look for students who are online gurus. Candidates should be well-versed in all digital platforms, and should be comfortable using secondary support and coordination platforms, such as HootSuite. We’re looking for organized, responsible and creative students who can bring The Bull & Bear’s social media strategy to the next level.

What You Would Be Doing

The Social Media Manager coordinates all of our social media accounts, including Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and Instagram, as well as other content platforms such as Youtube. As the Social Media Manager, you would be expected to work closely with the Managing Editor, Executive Editor and section editors to schedule and publish content, as well as the Marketing Manager(s), to develop and publicize consistent marketing campaigns across all social media platforms.

The Marketing Team is responsible for consolidating the brand image and identity of The Bull & Bear through all communications and across all platforms, both in digital and print. We’re looking for people who are dedicated, creative and understand what it takes to make an impactful campaign. Do you dream of a career where you can use acronyms like “B2B”, “CRM” and “SEO”? Who We Look For

We’re looking for passionate, creative students who have experience working in marketing roles and know a thing or two about creating a cohesive campaign. If you’ve got a good eye for marketing trends and love applying innovative, creative ideas, then this is the role for you. (Basic knowledge of graphic design is a plus. Students do not need to be Marketing or Management majors to apply.)

What You Would Be Doing

The Marketing Manager devises campaigns to promote and spread awareness of our magazine. As Marketing Manager, you would work closely with the Social Media Manager and executive team to establish and uphold a clear brand identity and voice across all platforms. You would also work closely with various support teams in the creation of creative material (such as posters and other advertisements).

The Business Manager is responsible for handling The Bull & Bear’s external business, primarily in the form of advertising, sponsorship and corporate relationships.

Who We Look For

We’re looking for passionate, outgoing students who have experience working in sponsorship/corporate relations environments. If you have good initiative, a comprehensive understanding of the logistics of working in a media organization, and a creative and innovative vision, we’re looking for you.

What You Would Be Doing

As Business Manager, you would be responsible for liaising with the wider Montreal community to secure corporate relationships between The Bull & Bear and partners ranging from small, local businesses to wider, national corporations. As Business Manager, you would also be responsible for maintaining positive relations with the MUS, as well as coordinating printing-related activities for the magazine.

Pixels and vectors and layers, oh my! If a day spent on Photoshop sounds like heaven to you, why not apply and make your paradise a reality?

Who We Look For

We primarily look for individuals who are relatively well-versed in Adobe Creative Suite (namely Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign), though experience is not necessarily a determining factor, and we are open to individuals who are passionate and willing to learn. Previous graphic design experience in a team setting is a plus.

What You Would Be Doing

As a Graphic Designer, you would be working closely with section editors, the Layout Editor, and the Marketing Team, to create appealing visuals for a variety of purposes, including accompanying graphics and media for published content, posters and other promotional materials, and various other needs (as they arise).

If you frequently find yourself correcting people when they use “their” instead of “there,” or perhaps “your” instead of “you’re,” love to play devil’s advocate and consider all sides of an issue, and consider yourself well-versed in the world of researching facts and figures, then this is the job for you!

Who We Look For

We’re looking for a responsible individual with a good eye for all things grammar, syntax and style. We’re looking for someone with strong analytical abilities and a multifaceted perspective on issues. Experience in conducting secondary research is a plus. Above all else, we are looking for someone who is dedicated to ensuring quality and committed to helping us create the best content possible.

What You Would Be Doing

As a copy editor, you would be working closely with the Editorial Board (section heads, Managing Editor and Executive Editor) to proofread and fact-check all content at The Bull & Bear. You would be an active participant in composing the final magazine product that is sent to print each month, as well as an integral component of The Bull & Bear’s commitment to providing the most factual, detailed coverage and insight possible.

Got a good eye for design, spacing, text placement, and all things related to layout? Want to apply your skills to a situation where you can directly contribute to a final, published product, while developing your abilities in both design and teamwork, collaboration and coordination? Then the layout team sounds perfect for you!

Who We Look For

We primarily look for individuals who are relatively well-versed in Adobe Creative Suite (namely InDesign; Photoshop and Illustrator are an asset, but are not necessary), though experience is not necessarily a determining factor, and we are open to individuals who are passionate and willing to learn. Previous experience working in a layout/design setting in a media or publishing organization is a plus.

What You Would Be Doing

As a member of the Layout Team, you would be working closely with the Chief Layout Editor to consolidate and compose the visual appearance of The Bull & Bear each month. You would be directly contributing to the final product that goes to print, by designing spreads, laying out text, graphic and visuals, and assisting in ensuring the overall quality of The Bull & Bear’s visual identity.

As an Illustrator, you would be working closely with section editors, the Layout Editor, and the Marketing Team, to create appealing compositions for a variety of purposes, including accompanying graphics and media for published content, posters and other promotional materials, and various other needs (as they arise).

Who We Look For

We primarily look for individuals who have experience working with online content platforms, namely WordPress, as well as programming languages such as HTML, CSS, JavaScript and PHP. We’re also looking for individuals with previous web development experience, particularly in a team setting. Above all else, we are seeking passionate, creative web developers who are interesting in helping The Bull & Bear elevate its web presence to the next level.

What You Would Be Doing

As an member of the web team, you would be working closely with the Web Editor to consolidate The Bull & Bear’s online identity. This would involve tasks such as designing online web pages, working on regular website maintenance, developing new and innovative ways to display content, and much more.

If you love being behind the camera, regularly throw out words like “ISO” and “aperture,” and have a good eye for a great shot, then this is the role for you!

Who We Look For

We primarily look for individuals who have experience working in event photography or videography. Applicants should be well-versed in using camera equipment, and experience with Adobe Lightroom is a plus. Applicants can apply to be a photographer, videographer, or both, but should have relevant past experiences in the role for which they apply.

What You Would Be Doing

As a member of the Media Team, you would be responsible for regular event coverage of MUS and McGill-wide events, through either photography or videography.
