Sonder: An All-in-One Housing Solution

As the bliss of the new year has worn off and our schedules are become bombarded by midterms, the sea of housing page advertisements on Facebook that flood our screens for the coming year are a constant reminder of our growing to-do list. While you may be looking forward to moving out of residence into your first place or are just excited to get out of your lease with your schmuck roommate, the stress of finding home-sweet-home is universal. Finding the apartment is just one obstacle you must cross before figuring out where you are going to buy furniture, a potential subletter over the summer, and storage for all the junk and street-signs you have accumulated over the year. While they cannot help you with your next midterm, Sonder is here to take your housing worries away.

Sonder is an international hospitality agency that offers flexible leasing for students in the McGill Ghetto, Plateau, and Downtown area. Offering apartments from 1-6 bedrooms, places come pre-furnished (designed by interior decorators – see below) with kitchenware, other household essentials, a cleaning service option, internet, and storage over the summer. While Sonder offers a variety of services, the most enticing thing they offer is the ability to sign 4-10 month leases. This can remove all subletting stress if you are not in the city over the summer or are going on exchange.

Sonder was also started at McGill. When Francis Davidson and Lucas Pellan made the decision to sublease their first apartment between their first and second year at McGill in 2012, they had little reason to expect the profound impact it would make on their lives. As anyone who has gone through this experience knows, it can be a pain finding a subletter in the McGill ghetto. However, using a short-term rental site, Davidson and Pellan were able to not only pay their rent but generate a profit. Leveraging this model they scaled their idea, renting out several apartments and subleases in the next year – Sonder was born. Sonder’s growth during Davidson and Pellan’s time at McGill eventually led the duo to move the company’s headquarters to San Francisco after dropping out of school in their last semester. Despite great highs and lows in the company’s short life, Sonder currently holds units all over North America and Europe. It has clearly established itself as a successful company with a promising future.

Started by two McGill students, the spirit of Sonder is based on innovation and convenience. Sonder gets rid of the rude landlord we are all forced to know and the hassle of the moving process that commemorates the end of each the school year.
