Many McGillians say their time abroad was one of, if not the, most eye-opening experiences of their university career. Stories of adventures in the bustling streets of Mexico City or on the beaches of Southeast Asia are told to captivated first- and second-years by returning upperclassmen. This opens many up to the idea of heading abroad for a semester of their U2 year.
For the many students at McGill intending to graduate in four years, the winter semester of their second year is often filled with questions about exchange from their friends, family, and parents. The process may seem daunting at first, but it can be broken down into a few simple steps.
Step 1: Explore McGill’s Exchange Partners
McGill offers exchanges within five regions: the Americas, Asia, the Middle East, Europe, and Oceania. Within these regions, offerings are determined by faculty. The number of schools offered differs greatly depending on region, with ten UK universities open to all faculties in comparison to a mere four universities available in the Middle East.
While browsing, it is important to consider the length of the exchange you want to go on. While single-semester exchanges are more common, quite a number of students opt for a full year, which is only offered at select universities. Additionally, it is important to research the specificities of each host university. These include semester dates, language requirements, accommodation, cGPA requirements, and more. Finances are also an important factor. While you’ll continue to pay McGill tuition no matter where you go, the cost of daily life differs greatly by location. You also have to consider the visa application process. Does the country you’re interested in require you to get a visa? How long does an application typically take to process? Are there any health checks you must pass? Researching these questions, and many more, is necessary for a smooth application process.
Step 2: Apply for Exchange
Applying for an exchange is easier than it may seem. A cGPA of 3.0, as well as having already completed 24 credits at McGill (eight three-credit classes), is required in order to apply. You must also ensure that your personal information on Minerva is up to date.
If your cGPA is between 2.0 and 2.9, you do not qualify for a traditional exchange application process. However, you may participate in a “study away” program, in which you pay the tuition fees of the host university. More information regarding that option can be found here.
It is also important to meet with your Faculty Study Away Advisor to receive feedback on your tentative school selections and transfer credits. This is particularly important for students enrolled in high-credit programs, such as Sciences, Engineering, or a Joint Honours BA.
Once you have completed your research and discussed options with an advisor, you can begin your application in Minerva. Screenshots guiding you through the form can be found on the exchange website. After writing short statements detailing your interest in each of your top four universities, you will be asked to rank them in order of preference. You are also required to identify eight courses at each host university that align with your McGill degree. Finally, you’re ready to submit! Results regarding exchange decisions typically arrive within eight weeks of applying.
Exchange is a truly amazing experience that allows you to fully immerse yourself in a new life, with the added benefit of possibly escaping a Montreal winter. Schools in Asia, Europe, South America, and elsewhere are made easily accessible, providing an opportunity for adventure and discovery before your final year at McGill. Just a few clicks for a lifetime of memories and stories.
